Glutathione (GSH)
GSH plays an important role in protecting cells from biological and abiotic stress. GSH is the main substance that resists free radicals and reactive oxygen species in cells and can protect cells from various exogenous substances and carcinogens.
GSH also plays a key role in many biochemical and metabolic processes, such as guiding DNA repair, protein synthesis and amino acid transfer, controlling apoptosis or programmed death, and increasing T cytotoxicity. It has been used as a melanin inhibitor in the cosmetics industry in some countries. Currently, yeast is mainly used to produce this substance, and attempts have been made to increase GSH content in plants with some success.
Recently, researchers at the university of Tubingen in Germany reported that they successfully expressed the GSH synthase from streptococcus thermophilus -- gamma glutamine cysteine ligase (stgcl-gs) in tobacco, and found that the substance was neither easy to be REDOX nor sensitive to the feedback resistance of GSH.
The amount of GSH accumulated in the leaves of transgenic tobacco expressing stgcl-gs is very high (up to 12 microns of GSH/gFW, depending on different stages of development), which is 20 to 30 times higher than that of wild varieties and will be further increased with sulphate fertilizers, the researchers report in the Plant Biotechnology Journal. The researchers also say the gm crops are more resistant to abiotic stress. Because stgcl-gs expression does not affect plant growth, it can compete with the current yeast production system.
